This is a type of carpet that just recently has become popular among common people, and its popularity is constantly increasing. And the explanation is obvious - these traditional tribal carpets, hand knotted of natural coloured wool, with a long pile and surprisingly modern patterns, are irresistible.
The majority of these carpets are characterized by their white or light background colour and their graphic patterns in black. Since it´s the women knotting the carpets, they incorporate their personal experiences of the conditions of womens life, like child birth, fertility, nature, beliefs and spirituality, into the patterns. In some cases one even thought the carpets could ward off evil spirits.
The brown and black lines in the pile often creates abstract and/or diamond shaped patterns, and the carpets almost always lacks borders.
Older carpets may have patterns that includes talisman symbols, characters from the ancient Berber alphabet and geometric patterns, reminiscent of the old Native American, Navajo designs.
As early as the mid-20th century leading modernists and architects, like Le Corbusier, Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer and Arne Jacobsen, discovered and appreciated the qualities of the Beni Ourain carpets ? both the craftsmanship and the esthetic assets.
